The Netflix My Suggestion Box Project

TL;DR

  • This was my final project and it was part of my User Experience Design Immersive course at General Assembly (2014).
  • Our challenge was to create a solution that gave a feeling of limitless possibilities, while expanding the catalog and as solution to find great content;
  • With My suggestion Box users can recommend their favorite movies/TV series within Netflix to their Facebook friends.

Challenge

Netflix was looking to significantly increase social activity & sharing on their site between users.

Our goal was understanding how people find and share movies.

My Role

Conduct Personal User Interviews, Research, Competitive Analysis, co-Define the vision and Minimum Viable Product, Wireframing mobile prototype, and assemble the deliverable.

The Team

Teamwork made it all happen... Designing an app takes teamwork. We used daily meetings and Google Drive to stay on the same page and work together.

The Process

For this project the first stage, research and comparative & competitive analysis, were crucial due to the new strategy the company implemented recently. A seamless navigation that provides a unique experience since the beginning to a narrow audience was a constraint, but also a challenge we really enjoyed to work with.

We were really lucky because almost everyone knows about Netflix and what its services are. Despite project constraints we could reach out Netflix's members and gather substantive data.

We also took a deep dive into Netflix's evolution and understood that FACEBOOK's integration within the platform was a great opportunity given previous decisions taken by Netflix.

Why spending so much time defining personas? Well, it is a primary exercise. Before open our software design tools we knew exactly who the users were and how they behave and interact with our design. That's it!

Design process

Netflix is a great company that has built its reputation on the business model of flat-fee unlimited rentals without due dates, late fees, shipping and handling fees.

Netflix's main goal is all about connecting people to the movies they love and has developed a world-class movie recommendation system.

The streaming company has invested in more streaming content licensing deals, has also focused on developing better viewing experiences on the web and across mobile platforms and successfully debuted original streaming shows. But how to transform specific user needs into something unique that keeps them and brings in new customers...?

User flows

Designing for three different platforms established the need for common core steps. All had to flow seamlessly within the corporate design theme while observing their respective platforms requirements.

With so many galleries and content options, offered through multiple platforms and an array of user-configurable options within the experience, sitemaps went through several iterations before we defined the right solution.

Wireframes

To facilitate member experiences with the new product we designed user interfaces that preserve Netflix's brand identity and make navigation seamless and intuitive helping them feel comfortable transitioning among platforms.

We put a huge emphasis on clearly offering various options for creating and sending suggestions to help members get what they need to wherever they are within Netflix's platform.

The Prototype

One of the final results is available through the link below. After several iterations we finally sharpened our prototypes and integrated them seamlessly within the main Netflix's multiplatform structures.
